Suvrat’s Story

Lives change through education

Suvrat’s father deserted their family when he was 10 months old. His mother Hanika worked as a maid at a household near Rourkela, Odisha. She could have sent Suvrat to a school near her father’s village home where she was living to make him an electrician or an office assistant. But Hanika had other plans. She moved from her father’s house close to one of the prominent English medium schools in Rourkela and Suvrat was able to enroll there as Hanika got an employment in the school as an Ayah. By studying in an environment that recognized his individual potential and encouraged excellence, he passed his ICSE exams with 89% and was admitted to NIT Rourkela, a premier engineering institute, for B Tech in Mechanical engineering. He also won a government scholarship, which paid his fees. Today Suvrat works as General manager in the Rourkela Steel Plant. He is married to a doctor and lives in a three-bedroom flat with his wife, three children and mother. He is giving his family a life that his mother could only have admired from far.
